ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL: RIHANNA, CHRIS BROWN, J. HOLIDAY & JILL SCOTT [PERFORMANCES]…..

July 13, 2008

Rihanna performed a couple of her smash hit singles at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans last week. One of those smash hits was Unfaithful. Check out the performance below:

Nice vocal job for what it was worth. She has definitely improved over the years as far as vocals are concerned. She just needs to brush up on her performances because she lacks charisma. Never mind not wanting to be a murderer. She may well be if her audience ends up dying of boredom. Her Umbrella performance is after the cut as well as performances from her boyfriend Chris Brown, J. Holiday and Jill Scott. Mary J Blige and Keyshia Cole also performed but there aren’t much good video’s out there, but enjoy these anyway.

Rihanna performs ‘Umbrella’

Chris Brown performed “No Air” without Jordin Sparks

Chris performed Yo (Excuse Me Miss)

J. Holiday sang a medley of “Fatal” and “Suffocate”

J. Holiday sang his mega-hit “Bed”

Jill Scott performed “Hate On Me”

Jill Scott performed “A Long Walk”

Jill Scott performed “Its Love”

R&B CELEB SPOTTINGS: ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL DAY TWO & THREE + JENNIFER LOPEZ IN ITALY…..

July 7, 2008

Putting an end to the Essence Music Festival trilogy, here’s the last reporting of what went down on day two and three. Solange posed it up with money hungry pimp of a daddy, Matthew Knowles:

Oh, and big sis Beyonce slipped in behind the scenes to give Sol some support. She was even seen playing with her little nephew Daniel. Cute.

Other R&B acts that were there that I didn’t mention in previous posts include Estelle, Keyshia Cole, Jill Scott and Chrisette Michele:

Estelle Estelle Estelle. She really loves showing off those ashy knees.

Other R&B acts that attended and performed included Danity Kane‘s D. Woods, Musiq Soulchild, Keyshia Cole and Mary J Blige:

Keyshia showed off her affectionate side. Something we’re not use to seeing. I’m also reading that Young Jeezy is foaming at the mouth claiming Keyshia bought him an engagement ring and asked him to marry her but he knocked her back because he wasn’t ready to go there. Messy. Why he gotta put her business out there like that?

Keyshia and Chris Brown also did a signing:

All in all, it was an eventful weekend for the R&B celebs.

Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony hung out with fashion designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce in Portofino, Italy this past weekend:

Jen looked fab as usual. It’s as if she didn’t even have twins. Her and Halle sure are killing it in the post-baby stakes.

ALICIA KEYS, JILL SCOTT & MARY J. BLIGE COVER SPECIAL EDITION OF ESSENCE….

May 13, 2008

ESSENCE magazine has an annual ‘Black Music Month’ for their latest June issue. It features three of today’s influential R&B/Soul sensation’s and Alicia Keys, Jill ScottMary J. Blige all having their own impressionable covers for the special edition:

R&B is very much the evolution of today’s music scene, which I’m very happy about, being an R&B fanatic myself. With artists, REAL artists like Alicia, Mary and Jill on the scene, R&B will never be dead. The three ladies talk to Essence Editor Regina R. Robertson about how they’ve managed to stay relevant for so long in their careers as well as their success and longevity. You can check out an excerpt from the interview after the cut. If you want to read more, the magazine is on sale right now.

Rounding up three multiplatinum, Grammy-winning chart-toppers is no small feat, especially when they’re stationed in different cities and different time zones. Did we mention that one of them was on tour (Mary), one had just come off tour (Jill), and the other was between tours (Alicia)?

For us, Alicia, Mary and Jill are the truth and the light in R&B. During the past year, they, along with other female singers, have bumped the ’hood boys off the top of the charts. No offense, . fellas, but it’s always ladies first here. As the following excerpts from individual chats with each artist reveal, when it comes to penning hits, embracing success, and keeping ahead of the curve, it’s always about the music.

Essence: One thing you all have in common is that you each had a debut album that was a phenomenal success. How do you feel when you hear those songs now?

Mary J. Blige: It’s been about six months since I’ve listened to What’s the 411? I was in Japan working out, and when I heard it, I could definitely feel my youth, but I could also hear that I’ve always had an old soul. When I think back to that time, I remember that I was singing to escape. I understand that some people are stuck in that place, but I firmly believe that if you don’t evolve and grow, you will die.

Essence: From the outside looking in, it seems that success has been yours since day one, but there probably were, and are, disappointments. How do you cope when a project doesn’t pan out?

Jill Scott: This is life, and if something doesn’t work out, then it wasn’t meant to. I feel that there is a divine plan in all things. All I can do is the best I can do, and if it’s well received, then, yeah. If not, I hope life will give me an opportunity to try again. Do I challenge myself? Absolutely. But beat myself up? I just can’t do it.

Essence: Have you ever regretted folding to pressure from record labels?

Alicia Keys: In the beginning, I didn’t understand the concept of boundaries. I wanted to make sure the music was heard, but there’s a price you pay for that. I did everything and anything to promote my first album, like flying from New York to Los Angeles and back on the same day, which was a bit excessive.

Essence: Have you figured out the ingredients for the perfect song?

Mary: Yes, but I won’t tell. [Laughs] For me, it’s about being real and honest. And the lyrics have to be relatable.

Jill: Oh, I wish I knew. I think Ne-Yo knows. I think Carvin Haggins, who does a lot of writing for Musiq Soulchild, has the ingredients, too. My songs are mostly about life experiences, about being human and falling and getting back up. About loving and losing.

Essence: But aren’t those the ingredients right there?

Alicia: It’s always a bit of a mystery. A song should deal with a widely understood emotion, have a really strong, clear explanation of that emotion and a great melody that makes you want to sing it at the top of your lungs. Then the music should evoke the same feeling as the lyrics. Somewhere within all of that lies the perfect song.

CELEB SPOTTINGS: R&B SINGERS OUT & ABOUT ….

January 13, 2008

It was smiles all around for Beyonce, Jay-Z and Kelly Rowland when they all attended the Gianni Versace fashion show as part of Milan Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2008/2009 on January 12, 2008 in Milan, Italy:

The purpose of the event was to introduce the hottest trends of the season. The media flocked to this event which also shows off the work from the greatest Italian designer. It’s not like Beyonce would use this event to personalize her own wardrobe because to wear anything other than mama Tina’s HOD line would come across as rather deceitful.

More flicks:

Why is Beyonce’s face so plastered up with foundation? There’s so much that if you were to scrape it all off you’d be able to use it as icing to decorate a massive birthday cake. I like the natural make-up though, but she has on too much. Kelly didn’t look good either but since she was breathing the same air as Beyonce, it would explain why Kelly was looking more happier than usual.

Last night at the BET Honors, Alicia Keys was rewarded with the Entertainment Award. She was accompanied at the event by her mama:

She looked cute. The event took place in Washington D.C. and will air on the cable network on February 22.

Keyshia Cole was there too:

We know Keyshia eats, sleep and shits out the Ghetto but massive tats on women’s arms can’t get any tackier and ghetto than that.

Jill Scott was spotted leaving the Mandarin Hotel in Washington, DC:

Love her smile. She can light up a dozen dark caves. For anyone interested, Jill is going on tour. She kicked off her North American tour in New York on New Year’s Eve. The tour promotes her latest album The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 and she will do 26 other venues before the end of March. If you want to see her, check out her venue dates to see if she’ll be hitting a city near you.

Christina Milian was spotted heading to a meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, January 11:

Flawless. Christina doing what she does best for the paps. Looking gorgeous. You just never seem to catch this chick off guard. Love it!
